More on this.

Rather we just did it for you?

Let's get your business seen.

Social media, websites, SEO and ads from a team you can actually meet.

SEO Chrome extensions are small add-ons for the Google Chrome browser that show you SEO information about any web page you visit. With one click you can see a page’s title and meta description, check its headings, spot broken links, follow redirects or pull up keyword search volumes, all without logging into a separate tool.

For small businesses and marketers they are one of the cheapest ways to check your own website and see what your competitors are doing. Below are the SEO plugins for Chrome we think are worth installing, what each does, who it suits and which ones cost money. Every extension listed here was live in the Chrome Web Store when we checked in October 2026.

Start with one on-page checker and one keyword tool

You do not need ten extensions. Too many slow your browser down and give you conflicting numbers. For most small businesses, a sensible setup is:

  • One on-page checker to see titles, descriptions, headings and links on any page
  • One keyword tool to see roughly how many people search for a phrase
  • One technical helper, such as a redirect checker, if you manage your own website

A quick word on numbers. Search volumes, authority scores and traffic estimates are estimates. Different tools use different data and will disagree. Use them to compare options and spot trends, not as exact figures. For your own site, Google Search Console remains the most reliable free source of real search data.

The free on-page checkers worth installing

Detailed SEO Extension

Our go-to for a quick look at any page. Click the icon and you see the title, meta description, canonical tag (which tells Google which version of a page is the main one), robots settings, heading structure, image alt text, links and schema markup at a glance. It is free, fast and simple enough for anyone to use.

Best for: business owners and marketers who want a clean snapshot of any page.

META SEO inspector

A free, no-account-needed checker that goes a little deeper into the code. It reviews titles, descriptions and canonicals, heading structure, image alt text, Open Graph tags (which control how a link looks when shared on social media) and structured data. It also includes a broken link checker.

Best for: anyone who manages a website and wants to check social sharing tags and schema as well as the basics.

SEOquake

Made by Semrush and free to use. SEOquake adds a toolbar of metrics to pages and search results, and includes an on-page SEO audit, keyword density report and internal and external link analysis. It can feel busy at first, so it is worth turning off the parts you do not need in the settings.

Best for: marketers who like lots of data in one place and want a free page audit.

Keyword research extensions for content planning

Keywords Everywhere

One of the best-known SEO plugins for Chrome. It shows keyword data, including search volume, cost per click and competition, alongside Google results and on other sites such as YouTube and Amazon. There is a free tier with limited features. The useful numbers, such as accurate monthly volumes and trend charts, come with a paid plan.

Best for: anyone writing blog posts or planning content who wants volumes without leaving Google.

Keyword Surfer

Keyword Surfer shows keyword ideas and estimated search volumes in a side panel as you search Google. You can save keywords into collections and export them as a spreadsheet. It is a light, easy way to build a list of topics while you research.

Best for: small businesses brainstorming blog topics on a budget.

Ubersuggest

The Ubersuggest extension shows search volume, cost per click and competition for searches on Google, YouTube and Amazon, plus estimated organic traffic, backlinks and top pages for websites. It works on a free basis with daily limits, and you can pay to raise them.

Best for: a quick look at a competitor’s traffic and top pages alongside keyword ideas.

Toolbars from the big SEO platforms

MozBar

MozBar shows Moz’s authority scores, Domain Authority and Page Authority, as you browse and in search results, along with link highlighting and on-page and technical checks. Basic on-page details work without an account. A free Moz account adds the authority metrics, and a paid Moz Pro subscription adds more, such as Spam Score and keyword ranking data.

Best for: comparing how established your site looks against competitors in the same search results.

Ahrefs SEO Toolbar

The Ahrefs toolbar has a useful free side: on-page reports, link highlighting, broken link checks, redirect tracing, HTTP headers and the ability to view search results as if you were in another country. Ahrefs’ own metrics, such as traffic estimates and referring domains, need a paid Ahrefs subscription.

Best for: free technical checks for everyone, and full data for existing Ahrefs customers.

SEO Minion

SEO Minion handles on-page analysis, broken link checks, hreflang checks (tags that tell Google which language or country a page is for), a search snippet preview and a comparison of the raw and rendered page to spot JavaScript problems. It now requires a paid Keywords Everywhere plan at Silver level or above, so it makes most sense if you already pay for that.

Best for: Keywords Everywhere subscribers who want extra technical tools.

A technical helper for anyone running a website

Redirect Path

Made by Ayima, Redirect Path shows the status code of every page you visit and flags redirects as they happen, including 301 (permanent) and 302 (temporary) redirects, 404 errors and JavaScript redirects. It also shows HTTP headers and the server IP address. It is invaluable after a website move or relaunch, when you need to check that old addresses send people to the right new pages.

Best for: anyone launching, migrating or tidying up a website.

Pricing and features change often, so check each listing in the Chrome Web Store before you install. Only install extensions from publishers you recognise, and review the permissions they ask for, because many can read the pages you visit.

Extensions find problems, they do not fix them

An extension will tell you a page is missing a meta description or that a link redirects three times. It will not write the description, fix the redirect or decide which keywords your business should target. That still takes a plan, someone with access to your website and time each month to follow through. If the list of issues keeps growing faster than you can deal with them, that is usually the point to bring in help with your SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Are SEO Chrome extensions safe?

Well-known extensions from established publishers are generally safe. Check the publisher, the number of users, recent updates and the permissions requested, and remove any you no longer use.

What is the best free SEO Chrome extension?

For a quick on-page check, Detailed SEO Extension is hard to beat. If you want a fuller free audit, SEOquake and META SEO inspector are good alternatives.

Do SEO extensions slow down Chrome?

Some can, especially ones that add data to every search result. Keep two or three that you actually use and switch off the rest, or set them to run only when you click.

Can an extension replace an SEO tool or agency?

No. Extensions are great for quick checks, but they do not give you a full site audit, ongoing rank tracking or a strategy. Think of them as a torch, not a full survey.
