Rather we just did it for you?
Let's get your business seen.
Social media, websites, SEO and ads from a team you can actually meet.
B2B social media works when it builds familiarity long before a buyer is ready to talk to you. For most UK businesses that sell to other businesses, that means LinkedIn first, with your people doing more of the posting than your company page. Facebook and Instagram can earn a place too, especially when your buyers are owner managers, and B2B influencers and paid ads can widen your reach.
The hard part is not posting. It is staying consistent for long enough and proving that social media brings in leads. This guide covers which channels to use, how to get your team involved, how influencer marketing for B2B actually works and how to measure the results properly.
Most of your buyers are not buying yet
The LinkedIn B2B Institute popularised what it calls the 95:5 rule, based on research with Professor John Dawes of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute. The idea is that only around 5% of business buyers are in the market for a given product at any one time. The other 95% will buy at some point, just not now. Marketing Week quoted the B2B Institute’s Peter Weinberg and Jon Lombardo summing it up: “the brand that gets remembered is the brand that gets bought.”
That changes what B2B social media is for. If you only post sales messages, you are talking to the 5%. Useful, regular content keeps you in mind with the other 95% so that, when a contract comes up for renewal or a problem appears, your name is the one they think of.
LinkedIn should be your first channel
LinkedIn is still the only major platform where people list their job title, employer, industry and seniority. That makes it the natural home for B2B content and advertising. A simple LinkedIn plan looks like this:
- Company page: two or three posts a week covering case studies, team news, useful tips and events.
- Personal profiles: founders and senior staff posting opinions, lessons and behind the scenes stories. In our experience, personal posts often reach more people than company page posts.
- Video: short clips explaining one problem you solve. LinkedIn has been investing heavily in video, including pre roll video ads on publisher and creator content through its BrandLink programme.
- Lead Gen Forms: LinkedIn’s own forms, which pre fill a member’s details, cut the effort of enquiring from a phone.
LinkedIn ads tend to cost more per click than other social platforms, so targeting matters. Start narrow, with a defined list of job titles or target companies, and test a few messages before scaling. Our B2B marketing team builds LinkedIn campaigns around exactly this kind of account list.
Facebook for B2B marketing works more often than you think
It is easy to write Facebook off as a consumer channel, but the people who run small and medium sized businesses use it every day. If you sell to trades, independent retailers, hospitality, salons, farms or local service businesses, the decision maker is often the owner, and they are more likely to be scrolling Facebook or Instagram in the evening than reading LinkedIn.

Facebook for B2B marketing tends to work best for:
- Lower cost reach to owner managers in a specific area or industry
- Retargeting people who visited your website or watched your videos
- Lead ads with instant forms, connected to your CRM so the sales team can follow up quickly
- Groups where your buyers already ask each other for recommendations
The key is qualifying leads properly. Ask one or two screening questions on forms (such as company size or service needed) and tell Meta which leads turn into real opportunities, so its system learns to find more like them. Our paid social team sets up Meta and LinkedIn campaigns with this kind of lead quality tracking built in.
Employee advocacy multiplies your reach
Employee advocacy simply means your team sharing and creating content about their work. People trust people more than logos, and every employee has their own network of clients, suppliers and peers.
LinkedIn has built this into its ads too. Thought Leader Ads let a company sponsor posts written by individuals. Since March 2024, according to CMSWire, businesses can sponsor posts from any LinkedIn member, not only employees, provided the member approves the request. CMSWire also reported LinkedIn citing the 2024 Edelman and LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Study, which found that nearly 73% of decision makers said an organisation’s thought leadership was a more trustworthy basis for judging its capabilities than its marketing materials.
How to start an employee advocacy programme
- Make it voluntary. Forced posting reads as forced.
- Give people ideas, not scripts. A weekly list of three prompts (“a mistake you see clients make”, “a job you are proud of”) helps more than ready made copy.
- Help with profiles. Update headshots, headlines and banners first.
- Set simple guidelines. What is confidential, how to handle complaints and when to tag the company.
- Celebrate it. Share good posts internally and from the company page.
Influencer marketing for B2B is about expertise, not fame
B2B influencers are rarely celebrities. They are respected consultants, trade journalists, podcast hosts, industry bodies and practitioners with an engaged following in a niche. A quantity surveyor with 8,000 followers who are all quantity surveyors can be more valuable than a business personality with a million followers.
Influencer marketing for B2B usually takes one of these forms:
- Guest appearances on their podcast, webinar or live stream
- Co-written reports, guides or research
- Panel sessions at events, filmed and cut into clips
- Sponsored posts or series, which can be promoted as Thought Leader Ads on LinkedIn
LinkedIn has been formalising this. In March 2026 it announced premium creator sponsorships through its Top Voices programme and self serve BrandLink campaigns for selected customers, according to DestinationCRM. Whatever the format, paid partnerships must be clearly labelled as advertising, and the UK’s ad rules apply to B2B content too. The ASA’s influencers’ guide explains how.
Measure leads, not likes
B2B sales cycles are long, and many buyers will see your posts for months before they get in touch, often through a search or a referral. That makes measurement tricky, but not impossible.
- Install tracking properly. Use the LinkedIn Insight Tag and the Meta pixel, plus each platform’s Conversions API where possible, so form fills and enquiries are recorded.
- Tag your links. Add UTM parameters to every link you post so Google Analytics shows which channel and campaign brought each visit.
- Ask “how did you hear about us?” on forms and in first calls. Self reported answers pick up the influence that tracking misses.
- Connect your CRM. Record the source of every lead and follow it through to proposal and sale.
- Report on pipeline. Track qualified leads, opportunities and won revenue by channel each month, not just impressions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best social media platform for B2B?
LinkedIn for most B2B businesses, because of its job title and industry targeting. Facebook and Instagram can work well when your buyers are owner managers of small businesses.
Does Facebook work for B2B marketing?
Yes, particularly for reaching small business owners, retargeting website visitors and running lead ads that often cost less per lead than LinkedIn. Qualify leads carefully.
How do you find B2B influencers?
Look at who your customers follow, which podcasts and newsletters they mention and who speaks at their industry events. Relevance and trust matter more than follower count.
How long does B2B social media take to work?
Expect several months of consistent activity before it shows clearly in your pipeline. Paid campaigns can produce leads sooner, while organic content builds over time.
