Overview.

An accessible, easy-to-navigate website designed to connect people with sight loss to vital services, trusted information and a supportive community.

Vision Support is a Chester-based charity supporting people with vision impairments across Cheshire and North Wales. Founded in 1876 and now celebrating 150 years of service, the charity helps people live connected, confident and capable lives through digital skills training, independent living assistance, home visiting, peer support, counselling and wellbeing services, telephone befriending and a dedicated Sight Loss Information Line.

  • WordPress CMS: Puts the Vision Support team in charge of their events calendar, latest news, information leaflets and newsletters, so the website stays as active as the charity itself.
  • Organised Resource Hub: A structured library covering eye conditions, the Sight Loss Pathway, accessible technology tips and help for friends and family, grouped so visitors can find answers without hunting for them.

  • Accessibility at the Core: Strong colour contrast, clear typography, skip-to-content navigation and a built-in accessibility toolbar help visitors with different levels of sight use the site comfortably on phones, tablets and desktops.

  • Fundraising and Partnership Journeys: Dedicated routes for donating, joining Club 150, signing up to challenge events, leaving a gift in a will, and exploring corporate partnerships or vision impairment training for local businesses.

  • Free Website Design & Build: Vision Support’s new website was delivered as part of Delivered Social Green, helping the charity direct more of its funding into frontline services for people living with sight loss.

The Challenge.

Building an Inclusive Digital Home for People With Sight Loss.

For a charity whose users often live with little or no sight, a website has to work for everyone, whether they rely on a screen reader, use magnification or are simply reading on a small phone screen. Vision Support needed a site that reflected its refreshed brand and 150-year heritage, explained a wide range of services in plain language, and gave family members, professionals, supporters and businesses a clear route to the information they were looking for.

  • Designing for Every Level of Sight: Colour contrast, text size, layout and navigation all had to support visitors with low vision, without the site feeling clinical or dated.

  • Presenting a Broad Range of Services: With support spanning digital skills, rehabilitation, home visits, counselling and befriending, the content had to be structured so people could quickly work out which service was right for them.

  • Supporting Fundraising and Grant Funding: The site needed strong calls to action for donations and events, and a structure built with the charity’s Google Ad Grant in mind to reach more people searching for sight loss support online.

  • Serving a Wide Region: Covering communities across Cheshire and North Wales meant the website had to act as the first point of contact for people who may never visit the Chester office, pointing them towards the Sight Loss Information Line and telephone befriending.
