Let's get your business seen.
Social media, websites, SEO and ads from a team you can actually meet.
If you are staring at a channel stuck at 2,300 watch hours with no sign of the finish line, it is easy to see why people search for ways to buy youtube watch hours. The promise sounds tidy: pay a small fee, wake up with 4,000 hours, and get monetised by the weekend. Unfortunately, that is not how it works, and the people who try it usually end up further back than where they started.
In this guide we will explain what the YouTube Partner Programme (YPP) actually asks for right now, what you are really buying when a seller offers “watch hours”, and why those hours tend to vanish or, worse, take your channel with them. Then we will get to the good part: honest, practical ways to build real watch time, even if you are a small business with a small team and a modest budget.
Everything here is general information based on public sources on the date we wrote it. YouTube changes its rules from time to time, so always check the official help pages before you act.
What the YouTube Partner Programme asks for now
Most of the confusion around youtube monetisation requirements comes from the fact that they have changed. For years the rule was simple: 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months. That is still the full threshold, but YouTube has since added an earlier entry level.
According to YouTube’s own help pages, which we read before writing this, there are now two tiers.
Tier one: the entry level
To join at the first tier you need 500 subscribers and three valid public uploads in the last 90 days. On top of that you need either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Reaching this tier unlocks fan funding and shopping features, such as channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks.
Tier two: ad revenue sharing
For a share of advertising and YouTube Premium revenue, the bar is higher: 1,000 subscribers, plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Three details trip people up, so they are worth spelling out:
- Only watch hours from long-form videos you have set to public count towards the 4,000 hours. Watch time on Shorts in the Shorts feed does not count towards that number, which is why Shorts has its own views route.
- Views and watch time from your own paid ad campaigns do not count towards eligibility. YouTube says only organic “follow-on” views after someone has seen your promotion are counted.
- Private, unlisted and deleted videos do not count either.
We could not see a single page that sets out every country-specific detail, such as which monetisation features are available in the UK, so check the “Eligibility” page inside YouTube Studio for your own channel. You can read the official wording on the expanded YouTube Partner Programme overview.
Can you buy youtube watch hours? Not safely
When a seller says you can buy hours, one of a handful of things is happening behind the scenes. We have not tested any of these services, and we are not going to name them.
- Bots and scripts. Software plays your video on a loop from lots of fake or hijacked accounts. This is exactly the sort of artificial traffic YouTube’s systems are built to catch.
- View farms. Real people, or devices, are paid pennies to leave your video playing. The viewers have no interest in your content, so the pattern looks nothing like genuine viewing.
- Paid ad campaigns. Some sellers just run ads to your video. As we mentioned above, watch time from paid campaigns does not count towards YPP thresholds anyway.
- Nothing at all. Some sellers simply take the money. If the service is not delivering anything, you have no one to complain to.
Even the “best case” version fails the basic test. The 4,000 hours are only worth anything because they act as a signal that real people want to watch what you make. Buying the signal without the audience is like buying a queue outside a restaurant: it does nothing for the food.
YouTube does not publish exactly how it detects artificial views, and anyone claiming to know the exact rules is guessing. What we can say is that YouTube reviews applications to the programme, and its policies cover engagement manipulation.
The real risks of bought watch time
The risks are not equal, so think of them as a ladder. Before you buy youtube watch hours, know which rung you could land on.
Hours that disappear
The mildest outcome is that the hours simply do not stick. Hours that YouTube considers invalid are not counted, so you pay, you wait, and your analytics show the same number as before. That is the cheap version of this mistake.
A rejected application
Next up is rejection. When you apply to the YPP, a person reviews the channel against YouTube’s policies. A channel with sudden spikes of watch time, no comments, no likes and viewers who leave after a few seconds is going to look odd. If your application is rejected, you generally have to wait before you can reapply, and the gap hurts when you are trying to build momentum.
Policy action against the channel
The most serious outcome is action under YouTube’s policies. YouTube’s spam, deceptive practices and scams policy includes a section on engagement manipulation. We read it, and it specifically prohibits offering rewards in exchange for likes, views or subscribers. YouTube also enforces its policies through warnings and strikes, and repeated or serious breaches can lead to a channel being terminated. We could not confirm from public pages exactly which behaviour triggers which penalty, so treat that as a general description rather than a rulebook.
If a channel is terminated, you lose the videos and the audience. For a business using YouTube to support sales, that is a heavy price for a number on a dashboard.
If you have seen this pattern on other platforms, it will sound familiar. Our guides on whether a follower growth service is legit and how to spot fake followers describe the same trap: the number goes up, the results do not, and the platform eventually notices.
Why bought hours do not help your business anyway
Let us assume for a moment that nothing bad happens. You buy the hours, YouTube approves you, and monetisation switches on. What have you actually gained?
For most small channels, ad revenue is modest, and we are not going to quote earnings because they vary too much to be reliable. If your goal is sales, enquiries or authority, ad money is rarely the main prize.
The bigger issue is what the algorithm does next. YouTube recommends videos based on how real viewers respond: how many click, how long they stay, whether they come back. If you pad your channel with viewers who do not care, you are teaching the system that your videos are less interesting than they really are. Genuine viewers then see less of your work.
And a monetised channel with no audience is still a channel with no audience. The thing you actually need, people who trust you enough to watch more of what you do, cannot be bought.
What real watch time takes
Watch time is the product of two things: how many people watch, and how long each one stays. A channel with 100 loyal viewers watching 20 minutes a month will beat a channel with 1,000 casual viewers who leave after 10 seconds. That is good news, because it means you do not need to be famous. You need to be useful, consistent and clear about who you are for.
To make the sums feel less scary, here is one rough example. Four thousand hours is 240,000 minutes. If your average viewer watches 4 minutes of a video, you need about 60,000 views over 12 months, which is around 5,000 a month. If you can raise the average view to 8 minutes, you need half that. Making videos people stay for is often easier than finding twice as many viewers. These are simple illustrations, not predictions, and your results will depend on your niche.
If you are brand new, expect months rather than weeks. Plenty of channels take a year or more, and that is normal. Anyone offering to buy youtube watch hours for you is selling a shortcut that does not exist.
Honest ways to grow your watch hours
Here is what we would do if we were building a channel from scratch, in rough order of importance.
- Pick one clear audience and one clear problem. “Videos about marketing” is too broad. “Simple social media tips for plumbers in Hampshire” is something a person can say yes to in two seconds.
- Fix your first 30 seconds. Tell viewers what they will get and show them quickly. Cut long intros, logos and waffle. Your audience retention graph in YouTube Studio will tell you exactly where people leave.
- Make titles and thumbnails honest and specific. A promise you cannot keep raises clicks but lowers watch time, and watch time is the whole point.
- Build playlists and end screens. If someone enjoys one video, make it effortless to watch the next. Series and playlists are one of the simplest ways to turn one view into three.
- Publish on a rhythm you can keep. Once a week for six months beats daily for three weeks. Batch your filming so it does not eat your diary.
- Use Shorts as a doorway, not the destination. A short clip can introduce you to new people, then point them to the fuller video. If you are also working on short-form elsewhere, our guide on how to get followers on TikTok covers many hooks and formats that transfer well.
- Search for what people ask. Use YouTube’s search suggestions and your customers’ real questions to choose topics. Videos that answer a question can keep earning views for years.
- Share where your audience already is. Embed videos in blog posts, send them in newsletters, and put them in your email signature. Views from real people who followed a link count just fine.
If you are tempted to pay for something, pay for clear sound or tidy editing instead, which does more for retention than almost any trick. Advertising your videos is allowed, but remember that hours from paid campaigns do not count towards the monetisation thresholds, so treat ads as a way to find an audience rather than a shortcut to the number.
Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to buy YouTube watch hours?
We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice. The more practical point is that it breaks YouTube’s rules on engagement manipulation, so the risk is to your channel rather than a fine through the front door.
What are the youtube monetisation requirements in short?
For full ad revenue sharing, YouTube asks for 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. The entry tier asks for 500 subscribers, three public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. Always check the live figures in YouTube Studio.
Do watch hours from ads count?
Not directly. YouTube states that views and watch time from paid ad campaigns do not count towards eligibility, though organic follow-on views can.
How long does it take to reach 4,000 hours?
It depends entirely on your topic, consistency and video quality. Many channels take a year or more, and some never need to, because the channel is doing its job without monetisation.
Will YouTube remove fake hours automatically?
YouTube does not publish exactly how it detects artificial activity, so we cannot say when or how it will act. Hours it deems invalid are not counted, and the policy risks described above still apply.
Can I recover a channel that has been terminated?
YouTube has an appeals process, but we cannot promise any outcome. Our guide on a TikTok account banned shows how appeals tend to work on social platforms, and the same habits (calm, honest, evidence-based) apply on YouTube.
